“She wanted Jason Kelce jumping out of the box shirtless like he was at the game,” Gionis said, referring to the Philadelphia Eagles football center who infamously tore off his shirt in celebration and support of his younger brother, Travis Kelce, the tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs. With the upcoming AFC championship coming up, the customer added that she wanted “Go Chiefs” written on the cake.
Gionis, the co-owner of Sweet Girlz, and her team got to work and created a likeness of the elder Kelce brother donning nothing but a hat, his eyes squinting in joy.
“We freehand our designs, we drew it on a piece of paper, then drew it on the cake,” she said.
The effect was uncanny, a bare-chested Jason Kelce taking over most of the cake with a green background and “Go Chiefs” dancing along his arms.
The cake is taking on a life of its own. As of Tuesday afternoon, a post on Sweet Girlz’s Facebook page has 160 reactions and nearly 30 comments. “Be jelly,” one customer posted next to his cake. “This is brilliant!” another says.
A Missouri bakery was also inspired by the Eagles center’s celebration, with a similar design on its cookie cake.
Gionis said she can’t believe the cake has gotten so much attention, and credits her customer’s vision with the cake.
“It was her idea, and we just replicated it,” she said.
So far, Gionis has 26 confirmed orders for the design, which can be etched on a regular or cookie cake (the original was on a cookie cake).
